The business made a significant investment in&amp;nbsp;technology in 2009 which won them two national awards, the PFM Magazine and i-fm.net e-business award and national contractor of the year award from Mitchells &amp;amp; Butlers. During the same year Chardfm secured significant new business including the account to maintain the Co-operative Groups retail and banking outlets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Iain has a track record of success in business, starting his first fm business in 1992, he has managed significant property portfolio’s including 68 care homes for Highfield Group. In 1999 Iain established Gardiner &amp;amp; Theobald Facilities Management for the G&amp;amp;T Group which grew to be the largest fm consultancy in the UK, delivering fm advice into the UK and NI governments, MOD, British Library and Cabinet Office. Iain left GTFM in 2004 to establish Jenkins &amp;amp; Marr Facilities Management which was sold to SMC Group plc. in 2006. In 2008 Iain joined Chardfm.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Iain is also the Chairman of the British Institute of Facilities Management the second largest fm Institute globally. His two year tenure finishes in June of this year after which he hoping to is join the Board of Global FM, the worldwide association of&amp;nbsp;associations. Iain has been instrumental in moving the Institute towards more use of Social Media and regularly blogs and tweets during his Institute business. IFMA the American fm association recently published an article in their FMJ publication to their 50,000 readers on social media in business penned by Iain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Iain is a member of the Entrepreneurial Exchange and is working on their behalf with Enlight the venture philanthropy part of the Exchange providing assistance to Skillforce.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Iain has been affectionately known to his friends as ‘gadget man’ for far too long, he has a passionate interest in technology and has a mantra of ‘if it improves productivity it’s not a gadget’, he started using Social Media in 2007 when he took the Chair of BIFM, blogging weekly until discovering and actively using Twitter, his business Chardfm has won awards for its deployment of technology and is actively using Social Media to develop new business. All in all, I think the layout and venue worked really well, a much different feel to the &lt;a href="http://network.podcastmatters.co.uk/video/new-media-breakfast"&gt;Glasgow Event&lt;/a&gt; which attracted over 70 people but, it was equally good.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'll leave it to others to comment on the content however, thank you to Calum and his team - we got lots of positive feedback about the bacon rolls - and we were very well looked after. I visited Turnberry for the practice day last week and I watched pretty much all of the coverage on TV and it reminded me that I have an unfinished painting of this magnificent place.  In fact, it's the last painting I started - some 12 years ago.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Seeing the images on TV of this remarkable coastline has inspired me to dig out the painting and finally finish it.  Fortunately, the hole in question &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;(No.10)&lt;/span&gt; hasn't changed since Tom Watson did win against Jack Nicklaus all those years ago.  I have taken a picture of the painting in it's current state and I will keep you updated with my progress. In fact, in one week this video has been viewed over 2,500,000 on YouTube, that's impressive and should make United Airlines customer relations department take some notice.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A band called Sons of Maxwell have produced the first of three songs about the fact that American Airlines broke his guitar whilst he travelled with them on a tour.  The band witnessed baggage handlers throwing their guitars about while they were sitting on the plane and when they retrieved the baggage a $3500 Taylor guitar was badly damaged.  American Airlines didn't deny it happened but they appeared not to care about it and the Band were getting nowhere with their complaint.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is the post on band member &lt;a href="http://www.davecarrollmusic.com/story/united-breaks-guitars/"&gt;Dave Carroll's blog&lt;/a&gt;:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;"In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged. They didn’t deny the experience occurred but for nine months the various people I communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on everyone other than themselves and finally said they would do nothing to compensate me for my loss. So I promised the last person to finally say “no” to compensation (Ms. Irlweg) that I would write and produce three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world. United: Song 1 is the first of those songs. United: Song 2 has been written and video production is underway. United: Song 3 is coming. The aim of the network is to build brand loyalty by enabling customers to communicate with each other and the dealerships.  Already the company can see the benefits of the network with some valuable discussions and blog posts.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;In once instance a customer with a complaint eventually closed his discussion because he was happy that the issue had been resolved to his satisfaction.  This was not only achieved by the dealership getting involved, customers took part in the discussion which contributed to the positive outcome.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Consumers want transparency and this network certainly offers a much higher level of access to the company than any other car dealership we know.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The company are also using video content to great effect; salesmen are creating their own walk around video of cars and posting them to the &lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/PhoenixCarCompany"&gt;Phoenix YouTube Channel&lt;/a&gt;.  The content is cheap to produce and enables the company to highlight exceptional deals very quickly and effectively.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;We are also creating a series of videos to introduce customers to people within the organisation that they might not always see but who play an integral part in the company's success.  We have already interviewed the Diner staff at Phoenix in Linwood where you can get fresh homemade food whilst you contemplate your purchase.  Future video will include; interviews with mechanics, bodyshop staff and, administration personnel.  This video content not only highlights the company's commitment to transparency but, will also "humanise" the organisation.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Whilst Phoenix operate in central Scotland, they are keen to encourage members from much further afield; research shows that customers will travel to buy the right car and, the Phoenix Linwood proximity to Glasgow Airport means they often get customers from the South. In doing so they are hoping to raise a very reasonable sum of money for The White Lily Fund &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;(www.whitelilyfund.com), a breast cancer charity and one that is very close to their hearts.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I spoke to Kyle earlier today and they have now reached Scotland - tonight they are staying North of Dumfries and they are on schedule to reach John O'Groats by the weekend. It would appear that there are lots of people in one of these categories, the network is growing very quickly - 85 new members yesterday - and as of now there are 2360 members on the network.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The network is for business networking and, so far, it has been used for that purpose however, we have had to do some strict policing to control unauthorised advertising, a little spam and, the odd "lady of the night" promoting their services. It is a private network so we had to send invitations to 480 members, this is when a small problem came to light caused by a few member companies who block social media sites in the workplace.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This got me thinking about the practice of blocking social networks in the workplace and I wondered what you think about this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Personally, I think employers should acknowledge the power of social media and embrace it with open arms. Learn how to use it to your advantage rather than trying to ban it. Let's face it, you can already access sites like Facebook from a mobile phone so, are you going to take mobiles from employees as they arrive in the morning?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I agree with an article written by David Eaves from The Globe and Mail, Canada who wrote “As free-thinking adults who manage to show up on time each day, we are ultimately responsible for our own conduct. Things like coming back from lunch on time, not sitting and reading the paper or a novel all day in our offices, or standing at the water cooler and chatting with colleagues until the whistle blows are where we are able to monitor and measure our own slacking. At least Facebook manages to keep people at their desks!”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The TUC (Trade Union Congress) in the United Kingdom issued a briefing document that suggests establishing a policy on usage within the workplace. I am certainly more in favour of this than an outright ban and total blockage. Like it or not, social networking is here to stay, the ‘Net Generation’ will see to that. Companies need to be prepared to communicate at this level and, when I see that Stanford University has recently launched a Facebook Class, I feel I might be right.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here’s what Cisco Systems had to say about encouraging staff to use Facebook, “We are now pulling motivation from the roots of the organisation rather than pushing from the top down”. Brand assassination has never been easier. The ability to destroy a product exists for everyone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sure, you can moderate your blog or forum and approve all the comments before they are posted however, what if someone attacks you on a blog or forum you don't control?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can't do much to stop it but, you must be aware of it in order to respond to it. Facebook’s own description is, “a way for you to connect to things other than people, without cluttering your Friend List”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You create a Facebook Page for your business, or product, or event etc. then invite people to become a ‘Fan’. By becoming a fan they are announcing to their friends that they are interested in your business, if these people are also interested in your business they can become a fan and so on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The obvious benefit is the ‘snowball’ effect created throughout the Facebook network however there are other benefits.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Facebook Pages are mini-websites and as such will be findable by the search engines so, it’s an additional outlet for your business or product.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Within the administration section for Facebook Pages, you can get ‘Insights’, a report on page views and other useful information. I recently set up a page for “&lt;a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Gordon-White/6214667426"&gt;Golf Prints by Gordon White&lt;/a&gt;” and within 24 hours I was able to determine that 58% of page viewers were woman, 84% of viewers were between the ages of 25 and 44 and, 16% were over 45, all useful information.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I would advise anyone with a business, product, service, event, charity etc. to set up a Facebook Page, it’s free to do and you can get started by going to the ‘Advertisers’ link at the bottom of any Facebook page. Many web owners believe this is their only purpose and don't use Favicons or view them as important, this is a mistake.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Browsers use Favicons to display bookmarked sites and, tab enabled browsers also use Favicons to display tabbed sites. So, if you want your site to stand out in a list of bookmarked sites you should use a Favicon on your site.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other sites now use Favicons to list sites. RSS feed readers use Favicons to display your site and some search engines are now using Favicons when displaying search results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, this small icon (16 pixels x 16 pixels) could become very well used and commonly displayed on the internet. Strictly speaking this is true however, for the same reason, this makes keywords more important than ever.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Search engine spiders don't look at Keyword Meta Tags but, in order to deliver relevant results, they look for the keywords in your content instead. For this reason it is essential that the keywords or phrases that people might use to find your products or services are included in the main content of your site.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You may have seen the term 'Web Optimised Copy', this is content which has been written to include as many search words and phrases as possible. When writing the content for your site it is important to get the balance right between optimised copy and readable content, search engine spiders don't buy your products, the visitor reading the copy is ultimately the target.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keywords are also important if you use Google Adwords, or any other Pay-Per-Click advertising.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A very useful tool to help you establish the keywords relevant to your website is &lt;a href="http://www.wordtracker.com"&gt;WordTracker&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;WordTracker will help you identify the keywords and give you a KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Indication) for each word or phrase. Unique titles are essential for web optimasation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The search engine spiders will look closely at the title of each page. The spider's task is to get all the content from your site and then the search engine algorithm analyzes your content to determine what each page is about. If they cannot differentiate between your pages or determine that too many of them are too similar then you have a problem.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Furthermore, some spiders restrict the number of characters they read in the title tag therefore, you should ensure that you don't make the common mistake of starting every title with your name. e.g. Design Matters coprporate identity page...Design Matters portfolio page...Design Matters contact page. I know I would rather hear someone explain something than read it in a memo or email.  I would rather have something technical shown to me than read a complicated instruction manual and, I would rather take a walk through a hotel via a video podcast than wait for the highly 'staged' glossy brochure arrive through the post.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By listening to someone you can hear the emotion and the passion they have for their product or service.  Having been in design for over 20 years I can certainly say that it is very difficult to portray the company owners passion on the printed page, podcasting makes it easy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Having discovered this means of communication I have dug deeper to see what it's being used for.  When you do this you quickly realize that the opportunities are limitless and I haven't found a single company in my client portfolio who couldn't take advantage of podcasting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are some of the ways that organisations are using podcasts:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A certain airline company has offered free pre-loaded Mp3 players as an incentive to use their premium services. Passengers received a corporate branded MP3 player preloaded with an audio magazine about other destinations served the airline.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A luxury car manufacturer offered MP3 players to encourage customers to take test drives. The players were preloaded with an audio infomercial with customer testimonials and interviews with engineers and designers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A financial institution gave away MP3 players to new customers as an incentive. The players were loaded with an audio magazine giving valuable advice on investment and money management strategies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Perhaps the most significant use I have come across is the move by National Semi Conductor to issue 8500 staff with video iPods.  National Semi Conductor has identified podcasting as the most effective way to communicate and train their staff.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Having been 100% convinced about the effectiveness of podcasting I have now set up a podcast production company in Glasgow, Scotland. You can, of course, view my business web page at http://www.designmattersgroup.com.  The site is full of information about what we do, with lots of examples of our work.  However, I intend to use this Blog to post news of what we are doing in a less formal manner.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I also intend to post some comments on what is going on in the world of design and, in particular, the world of internet design and marketing.  I have spent a lot of time, and continue to do so, exploring the latest techniques for developing online traffic and I would like to share this information with anyone who may find it useful.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Back to Design Matters, the first piece of news I would like to post is, on Tuesday 23rd May Design Matters will celebrate its 20th birthday.  We would take this opportunity to thank our clients, suppliers, employees, friends and family for the support they have given over the past 20 years.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many things have happened over the past 20 years and maybe I'll share some of the more amusing stories with you in future posts.
